ARIES, Courbevoie, France, 1903-1938

Firm "ARIES" was founded in 1903 by Baron Charles Petiet. In the same year, two of her cars were shown at the Paris Motor Show. The first had a two-cylinder engine and cardan drive to the rear wheels, the second - a 4-cylinder engine and chain drive. Like most automotive companies of the beginning of the century, “ARIES" did not manufacture its own engines. The engines were purchased from Aster from Saint-Denis.
In 1907, having changed its traditions, the company created its own 4-cylinder engine “14/18 CV” with a working volume of 1131 cm3, which turned out to be very interesting. It had a V-shaped arrangement of cylinders and a so-called desmodromic valve actuator (when the valves were opened and closed forcibly using the elements of the camshaft mechanism). It is this design that made the experts talk about a little-known company.
In 1910, “ARIES” dramatically increased the production of trucks, and during the war began the production of aircraft engines. But at the end of the war she returned to cars. Two new cars with 4-cylinder engines were presented: a light “7CV” with a 1085 cm3 overhead valve engine and “15CV” with a 3-liter engine in road and sporting versions. Sports options participated in races, including the 24-hour at Le Mans.
The crisis could not but affect the activities of a small company, but it was determined to overcome all difficulties. “ARIES” has mastered the production of new engines with a working volume of 1.5; 1.8 and 2 liters. Model “10CV” was produced even before 1938. She stood out for an unusual transmission: along with the standard three-speed gearbox, a two-stage main gear was used, which was ensured by a conventional passenger car 6 forward gears. Very few such cars were made, and before the war the company closed its automobile production.
However, after the war, she declared herself the release of lightweight motorcycles for motorized carriages under the brand ABG, but with the death of Baron Petiet in 1950, the name “ARIES" no longer appeared in the automotive world.
